Racing / Re: Justified retired
July 25, 2018, 12:22:57 PM
Even though Justify did win the Triple Crown, I feel like we never really got a real idea of how good he was...or wasn't. Only ran six times, never faced older. It's a flimsy race record, even for modern times.
His record pales when compared to other TC winners. Even Count Fleet, who was injured in his Belmont win and never raced again, ran (if I remember Watchmaker's article correctly) 18 times.
American Pharoah was retired promptly after his Classic win, but at least he ran three times after the TC and beat older.
I'm not saying Justify wasn't brilliant in his six races, but IMHO, racing historians are going to spend a fair amount of time asking; 'What was Justify, really?'

The news we've been dreading just came through, announced on TVG: Triple Crown winner Justify has been retired.
   Frack.   >:(

All the races on that big card have had their purses boosted, but the $2 million raise for the World Cup will give the winner $7.2 million.
      https://www.paulickreport.com/news/the-biz/dubai-world-cup-purse-boosted-to-12-million-35-million-now-up-for-grabs-on-worlds-richest-day-of-racing/
The total purse for the 2018 Pegasus was $16 million, with $7 million going to the winner. I wonder if Frank is going try upping the money for his prized creation? And has there been any more info about that Saudi race that was going to offer $17 million and run in February?

There could be a ridiculous amount of money on the table for three races early in the year. Any horse who could win those three might set a new earnings record...at least, until the next round of record-purse races.

Yes, Kurenai has been acting as the Mod/Admin there, so I tried sending her a Private Message. Still had the same 'not enough characters' issue, so I couldn't get the message through to her.
Pretty sure she's noticed that there are problems by now.

Racing / TBC hacked again?
July 24, 2018, 08:15:42 PM
I haven't been able to post on TBC all day, Keep getting a dialogue window telling me the there aren't enough characters in my post...even though there are more than enough.   :(
I've also noticed that some recent posts are now empty of their text, as though something has deleted them.
Have any members who belong both here and there heard anything?
Thanks.

Good for Gadot.
I understand that the filly is not going to try for their Triple Crown, but will be targeting the Alabama with an eye toward the BC Distaff.

I would think that, if the necropsy is going to be thorough, all the horse is 'pertinent.' You need the body to study the organs, like the heart and lungs, and the legs to examine fractures or tendon/ligament injuries.
Since most of the fatalities were euthanized, UC Davis isn't really trying to find cause of death. I presume that they're studying the whole horse to gather data on why a horse broke down. And if the horse collapsed and died suddenly, they probably want to look at its cardiovascular system.

Aw...a Lonhro.  :'( Not that all the horses aren't special, but I'm a fan of that Aussie black stallion's offspring.
I have a morbid, how-does-that-get done question, if anyone here has the answer.
UC Davis is up north. How does the track and/or owners transport a deceased 1000+ lb. animal there...and prevent decomposition during the long trip?

Maybe we shouldn't count our dancing chickens before they hatch?
Beholder was considered a lock before the Clement Hirsch. Stuff happens.

Guys, thanks for the suggestions on how to watch the Arlington races. Yes, I could do all or most of what has been suggested. Almost any obstacle can be overcome...if you throw enough money at it.  ;)
Not throwing $$$$ at this time.

Thanks, but anything that relies on a strong internet connection in order to stream races live is not really an option for me unless I double the $$ I pay ATM for an upgrade to my internet speed.
And watching anything on my modestly-sized computer monitor isn't quite as nice as watching on my 42" hi-def TV, while sitting in my over-stuffed rocker/recliner. ;P

OMG...St. Trinian. If you look up "eggbeater," you should find a video of St. Trinian paddling down the stretch.

It looks like some great racing, but I haven't found any way (besides throwing a ton of money and/or hours of aggravation at upgrading my DirecTV package or changing satellite carrier?) to watch the Arlington card.
It's disappointing, because these races often show who are the best turf horses in the country. IIRC, in years past Chicago's WGN would carry them, but my schedule indicates no racing Saturday afternoon.  :(

Is he going to be the first three-year-old to face older this year...even if only two of them?
