Racing / G1 Woodward Stakes - August 30th
September 04, 2014, 08:51:55 AM
Well, I was sorry I did not see any headlines - Its His Lucky Day...for Itsmyluckday.

What a race.

He was my top horse for the race. I liked Moreno winning the Whitney and I am glad he ran a respectable second.

Like War Pass, I really cheer for the son's of Lawyer Ron.

His performance here really makes me think that he would have given Verrazano all he could handle in the Pegasus and the Haskell last year if he had remained healthy.

And who know, maybe he is a 10 furlong horse.

I do wonder what his next race will be.

I think he should be rested...and not be given a 10 furlong effort in the JCGC. Maybe try the Kelso out...as a prep for the Classic. Generally, I do not like an 8 furlong prep for a 10 furlong race. Really, I think the best place for him is the G1 Awesome Again. If he likes the Santa Anita track like he should - then that's the right prep for the BC Classic. If he does not - then run him in the BC Dirt Mile or rest him for the Cigar Mile.

He certainly has recovered from his injury and Mr. Plesa is doing an incredible job with him.

Who knows? Maybe Monmouth Park will write a race for him - though I believe the turf festival is taking place in September.

Racing / Pennsylvania Derby Could Be The Best Ever
September 04, 2014, 08:43:12 AM
I am drooling at the possible line-up for the Pennsylvania Derby:

California Chrome
Shared Belief
VE Day OR Wicked Strong (I am thinking the latter since VE Day has shown himself to be the better horse at 10 furlongs with Wicked Strong achieving a 2nd, 4th, and 4th in 10 furlong or more races this year. Maybe he should be rested for the Breeders Cup Classic and not tested again (how many horses have run in the Derby, Belmont, Travers, JCGC and BC Classic in the same year and won one of the latter two? - I think the answer is zero- Unbridled probably comes closest having run in the Triple Crown races but he skipped the Travers taking the summer off). Plus - there is much more money to be gained in Philadelphia - and much more prestige. Tonalist loves Belmont Park - so for Team Jerkens to put all their eggs in this basket may not be prudent.)
Tapiture
Protonico

This race could have a lot to say about not only champion three year old, but also Horse of the Year.

If Shared Belief or California Chrome win out either one could be Horse of the Year.

If Chrome loses in Pennsylvania, but wins at Santa Anita he'll be Horse of the Year.

If Shared Belief loses in Pennsylvania, but wins in the BC Classic - a lot of debate will be raised.

Shared Belief
G1 Pacific Classic
G2 Los Alamitos Derby

California Chrome
4th G1 Belmont Stakes
G1 Preakness Stakes
G1 Kentucky Derby
G1 Santa Anita Derby
G2 San Felipe
California Cup

Its hard to overcome the 5 stakes wins by California Chrome.

And his beating Shared Belief in the Pennsylvania Derby one would think would ice his three year old championship.

Shared Belief, on the other hand, has a thinner resume and a loss to California Chrome in the PA Derby would give him a head to head win.

Is there any incentive for Shared Belief to come East? What if he runs in and wins the G1 Awesome Again and then takes on California Chrome. He would have 2 G1 wins against older horses. A win in the BC Classic would give him three wins against older horses...but his races would all be out West...and naysayers would challenge the competition there except in the BC Classic.

Now, Los Alamitos is dirt. However, is the loam of Los Alamitos the same as Santa Anita? Is Philadelphia Park better suited to Shared Belief than Santa Anita? I don't know.

I hope they send Shared Belief. Its the sporting thing to do. I do not know that I could choose a cheering interest. I love both Chrome and SB. The biggest irony would be if the top horses in the race are from California and the top East Coast three year olds stay away.

We know one isn't in Tapiture with Mr. Asmussen featuring his two top three year olds of either sex that day in Untapable as well.

Racing / The (G1) Personal Ensign
August 20, 2014, 10:53:28 AM
Well, I am disappointed after Rachel Alexandra's effort in the race that they reduced the distance to 9 furlongs from 10 furlongs.

However, I do understand with the Delaware Handicap being 10 furlongs and also in the summer they wanted to make the Personal Ensign attractive to horses that entered the DelCap as well.

This year's edition looks to be special.

Close Hatches who is coming off her strong win in the Ogden Phipps over champion three year old Beholder, and Eclipse runner-up Princess of Sylmar, will have a chance against the latter.

In addition, the upset winner of the Delaware Handicap, Belle Galantey, 4 of the 5 horses top finishers in the Ogden Phipps are entered - all stakes winners.

Close Hatches has been one of my favorites since she won the Gazelle or the Demoiselle on Wood Memorial day last year. I know Mr. Mott thought highly of this filly. It is nice to see her picking up Royal Delta's mantle for the barn. If she wins, this will be her fifth G1 win - third this year - and certainly place her at the top of the Distaff division.

While the duel between Princess of Sylmar and Close Hatches will be the main feature, sentimentally I would not mind seeing Stanwyck do well.

Well, here it comes - the late Summer Derby...

One of entries has already won the early Summer Derby on turf...and that's Mr. Speaker who won the Belmont Derby on July 5th besting G1 Secretariat Stakes winner Adelaide at 10 furlongs.

I have long hoped that Mr. Speaker would receive another chance on dirt. The Gulfstream dirt is peculiar and not to the liking of all dirt horses. If you examine the Holy Bull a number of dirt horses did poorly on that surface and have shown themselves to be top three year olds this year.

Wicked Strong is the most obvious example. He hated Gulfstream finishing in the middle of the pack in two efforts there including the Holy Bull. Returning to the NY circuit he has notched two important wins in the G1 Wood Memorial and the G2 Jim Dandy, both at 9 furlongs.

Racing / Saratoga News and Notes
July 17, 2014, 11:48:21 AM
FYI, from yesterday's NYRA press conference at Saratoga Race Course:

One alteration to the track this year has already generated complaints from fans. NYRA removed dozens of wood benches from the clubhouse porch along the apron and replaced them with dining tables that can be reserved for breakfast and lunch. Thomas Nicholson, 62, a longtime racing fan from Kinderhook, noticed the change this week during a visit to the track. It upset him because he loved sitting on the clubhouse benches and watching races near the finish line.
"I look at it as an exclusion, an elitist thing," Nicholson told a reporter. "I think once fans see what's actually happened there, this is going to be a huge thing. Now, if you don't have a reservation and get a table, you're out of luck."

Wise Dan breezed four furlongs in :50 2/5 with a gallop-out in 1:02 2/5. Keeneland clockers followed the 7-year-old Wiseman's Ferry   gelding out in 1:17 as he carried on around the turn.

What an impressive run in the Belmont Derby.

Mr. McGaughey said that he was likely headed to the G1 Secretariat next at Arlington Park.

I hope we get a chance to see him in the Joe Hirsch at Belmont Park in the fall.

He loves the turf.

And we all knew with his breeding he could get the distance.

I still think that he may have been fine on a different dirt track, but I am really happy to see him doing so well.

I think the small field is likely due to the proximity to the Met Mile which had a large field, and not that Itsmyluckyday has frightened anyone off.

Here is an excellent article from Bloodhorse regarding stamina in Triple Crown race winners.

Sources of stamina
https://www.bloodhorse.com/horse-racing/articles/85211/sources-of-stamina

Stamina Lines In American Thoroughbreds
http://www.sport-horse-breeder.com/stamina-lines.html

This should be resurrected each and every year when the naysayers come out to disrespect Triple Crown contenders.

The above stands in contrast to articles like this...

American Pedigrees Need Fresh Infusion of Stamina
https://www.thoroughbredracing.com/articles/american-pedigrees-need-fresh-infusion-stamina

Though I would suggest all pedigrees need a fresh infusion of stamina and speed to keep the breed durable.

Or articles like this that suggest American racehorses are no longer fast...

California Chrome's Attempt to turn back the clock in the Kentucky Derby

Racing / Back In Training After Setbacks
June 20, 2014, 07:44:27 AM
I see that Indianapolis is back in training after his setback earlier in the year - and he seems to be training sharply with two 3 furlong works on the 12th and 19th at 36.20 and 36.80, respectively.

I hope he continues moving forward and perhaps I can get a chance to see him out East at some point.

I do wonder what is up with Chitu and Midnight Hawk since I thought they were fine coming out of their last races - the Derby Trial and the Illinois Derby. Hope they are well.

Well, it seems like Albano is the only entrant out of the Pegasus. A shame about Ring Weekend not finishing.

It will be interesting to see who lines up for this race.

There may be some shooters from the July 5th Long Branch Stakes.

I keep hoping Shared Belief might enter if everything goes right in the Los Alamitos Derby.

And if he, Candy Boy and Bayern, finish 1-2-3 maybe we'll have three entrants from that race.

Racing / Should the Triple Crown Be Changed?
June 09, 2014, 06:29:19 AM
I have to send a vote of appreciation and respect to all the posters here.

I am certain that there are other sites out there that are focused on the remarks made by Mr. Coburn right after the race, which he confirmed in a press conference suggesting that changes need to be made to way the Triple Crown is run.

Not a word about it here.

Some of what was said in those remarks is absolutely correct. Tonalist was well rested. Had entrants in the Belmont Stakes been restricted to Derby eligible horses who also had run in the Preakness Stakes, we would have seen a Triple Crown since only two other horses would have been eligible and even with the injury, California Chrome finished ahead of those horses.

You folks are class acts and the reason I do not post on other sites.

People have long suggested that changes need to be made to the current format before we will ever see another Triple Crown winner.
I agree that we will likely never see another one under the current system.

However, I do not think that the current system will ever be changed.

Suggested changes have included:

1. Limiting the number of horses in the gate in the Kentucky Derby.

Result: California Chrome wins Kentucky Derby.

2. Restricting the horses that run in the Triple Crown races to those eligible to run in the Kentucky Derby.

Result: Medal Count wins Belmont Stakes if another horse, other than Matterhorn, steps on California Chrome's foot.

3. Restricting the horses that run in the Belmont Stakes to those eligible to run in the Kentucky Derby, who have also run in the Preakness Stakes.

This is Mr. Coburn's suggestion.

Result: California Chrome wins the Triple Crown, even if injured by another horse.

4. Changing the length of time between the Triple Crown races:

Results: Unknown.

a. Increasing the length of time between the Preakness and the Belmont Stakes to four weeks.
b. Increasing the length of time between all Triple Crown races to four weeks between each.
c. Increasing the length of time between the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness Stakes to three weeks.

5. Changing the distance of the Belmont Stakes.

What do you think?
