Racing / Sports Betting May Come To Monmouth Park
October 23, 2014, 06:52:11 AM
With a new law eliminating the ban on sports betting in NJ, Monmouth Park it trying to use some language in a court opinion to allow sports betting starting on October 26th.

However, the NFL, NCAA, MLB and others are trying to stop it.

http://www.nj.com/politics/index.ssf/2014/10/nj_sports_betting_experts_split_on_whether_bets_will_begin_this_weekend.html

Daniel Wallach, a gaming and sports law attorney in Florida, said there's a "very low likelihood" that Monmouth Park will start Sunday.

"Not only do the leagues present a very compelling argument that what is going on here is de facto regulations, but the judge will likely put in a placeholder until he has a hearing," Wallach said Wednesday.

A. Jeff Ifrah, a gaming attorney in Washington D.C., disagrees, noting that the leagues need to prove that betting this Sunday will cause them irreparable harm.

"If you honestly look at this, there is no basis to grant the league emergency relief," Ifrah said. "They are essentially asking the judge to prejudge the case, so their basis has to be really, really strong."

Racing / Revolutionary Retired
October 20, 2014, 11:46:08 AM
Well, it had been up in the air what Winstar was going to do with their promising 3 and 4 year old...and they decided to retire him.

I think he is close to the best son of War Pass.

He never won a G1 race like Java's War did in the Bluegrass Stakes, but he won the G3 Withers Stakes and the G2 Louisiana Derby and finished 3rd in the Kentucky Derby. At 4, he won the G2 Pimlico Special and placed in the G2 Oaklawn Handicap.

Thus, not only did he have more graded stakes wins, but he also finished the best of any War Pass son in a Classic (also 5th in the Belmont Stakes.

Also, his $1.3 million in earnings are I believe the most of any War Pass son.

http://www.winstarfarm.com/articles/millionaire-revolutionary-retires-to-winstar.html

I think I am going to have to get a job a Winstar if I am ever going to see all the stallions they currently stand. LOL

Racing / Treve's Half Sister Trophee
October 20, 2014, 06:14:48 AM
I can't believe I am only just finding out that Treve's half sister was at Saratoga this last summer in Mr. Clement's barn...and she even raced over the turf course August 9th...

She is a looker...

I'll have to see if I got pictures.

And I believe it is pronounced Tro(rolling the r) - fay.

I am sorry I did not post this sooner.

This was a big loss and a shock.

And that's just off the top of my head.

I was reminded of this by this Bloodhorse e-mail:

Racing / May The Great Cigar RIP
October 08, 2014, 09:18:58 AM
Our visit to the Kentucky Horse Park was less for Cigar not being there.

I guess his absence was more serious than we had hoped/thought.

http://www.bloodhorse.com/horse-racing/articles/87876/racing-hall-of-famer-cigar-dead-at-24

He will be sorely missed.

I'll never forget in 1996 coming home from Kentucky - our first visit there - and catching his loss in the Pacific Classic on the Armed Forces Radio Network.

Racing / 2014 Performances of the Year So Far
October 06, 2014, 11:57:38 AM
Here are 12 of my top moments of racing this year...

1. Shared Belief winning the G1 Pacific Classic over elders.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PpkPw6hykJ4

2. Game On Dude winning the G1 Santa Anita Handicap for the third time over the BC Classic winner Mucho Macho Man and runner up Will Take Charge.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5UhpEVuj0gc

3. Wise Dan making his return from sickness in the G1 Bernard Baruch edging out Optimizer.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=231PCUip4gs

4. VE Day winning the G1 Travers Stakes.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nDpt69CuXIU

5. California Chrome winning the G1 Kentucky Derby.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j1hZ7d-gLnw

6. Tonalist besting elders in the G1 Jockey Club Gold Cup at Belmont Park.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a0_lha2byiw

7. Bayern winning the G2 Pennsylvania Derby over the defending Kentucky Derby winner.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IbuM4DkP1W8

8. Close Hatches winning the G1 Ogden Phipps over Princess of Sylmar and Beholder.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s7C41IpLdTc

9. Main Sequence winning the G1 Joe Hirsch at the wire.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E2LNCaCt0wY

10. Private Zone winning the G1 Vosburgh for the second time.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=in3QXe-1YcU

11. Palace Malice winning the G1 Metropolitan Mile.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YoL-0tfRLic

12. Moreno winning the G1 Whitney Stakes over Palace Malice.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NBbYtkvqpxo

Why do I have Moreno ahead of Itsmyluckday? Well, I do not think many persons gave either horse much of a shot in the race. Their finishing 1-2 proved that they were contenders, so Itsmyluckday winning the Woodward was not that much of a surprise.

13. Itsmyluckyday winning the G1 Woodward Stakes over Moreno.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=clyeJQ7kWIE

14. Mr. Speaker winning the G1 Belmont Derby.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KfnEZWHZ6OI

And I know its not an American race - but Treve winning the Prix de l'arc de Triomphe was pretty special...

I know I have left many out so please add them...

Shuruq

Well, this race was a big surprise for me.

It seemed that Close Hatches was fit and ready for this race. She did not appear to miss any works.

I wonder if she would have been better suited for the G1 Beldame a week earlier at Belmont Park. This would have offered her an additional week to prepare for the Breeders Cup Distaff, at a track she had won multiple G1 races over. Well, hindsight is always 20/20.

She had everything going her way to this point - and trying out the new surface at Keeneland appears to have been a bridge too far at this juncture.

Hopefully, this will not diminish her chances in the BC Distaff and she comes out of this race 100% healthy to have a rematch with Beholder.

Racing / 2014 Breeders Cup Distaff
September 26, 2014, 08:25:00 AM
Examining the fields for the 2014 Distaff we have the favorites...Beholder and Close Hatches.

I wonder about Untapable...

Close Hatches has been impressive winning against the best of the older horse division, but her BSFs have not been very impressive...and neither have Beholders.

Untapable has had the best BSFs for a female route horse...then again...her best times were in March and May...

We do have two coasts with Super Saturday festivities...

Here is what we are looking at from the Breeders Cup host venue.

Remember last year, the G1 Awesome Again was a tune up for eventual BC Classic winner Mucho Macho Man. Its a shame he is not here to contest the race again this year. He will be missed.

But the Awesome Again is not the only "awesome" race (pun intended) on the card that day...

Three year old defending champion Beholder is featured in the Lady Secret/Zenyatta...I don't know what they are calling the race anymore.

Past Performances are available for all nominees below:

Does not seem like much of a field for Shared Belief, but it will be interesting to see how he handles the dirt at Santa Anita in preparation for the Breeders Cup Classic. Racing / 2014 G1 Breeders Cup Classic
September 23, 2014, 01:32:47 PM
So...the contenders list is quite long right now...and quite interesting...

What a field...of course all of these cannot make the gate...and I can highlight those I think will make the gate with an uhnderline :"thus"...

Atreides

13th G1 Kentucky Derby, 10 furlongs
3rd G1 Santa Anita Derby, 9 furlongs
G2 Robert Lewis Stakes, 8.5 furlongs

Close Hatches If Mr. Mott truly believes she is the next Royal Delta in his barn this move might make sense. However, the only reason to enter her in the Classic may be that he thinks Beholder owns the Santa Anita track.
4th G1 Spinster, 9 furlongs.
G1 Personal Ensign, 9 furlongs defeating Princess of Sylmar
G1 Ogden Phipps, 8.5 furlongs, defeating Princess of Sylmar and Beholder
G1 Apple Blossom, 8.5 furlongs

Racing / Princess of Sylmar Retired
September 22, 2014, 09:21:34 AM
I know this is old news - but http://www.bloodhorse.com/horse-racing/articles/87482/top-filly-princess-of-sylmar-retired

This was sad for me because I was hoping she could reprise her impressive victory in the Beldame.

I give her connections a lot of credit for what they did in the Breeders Cup last year entering the presumptive three year old filly champion.

And then they campaigned her in the top races this year where she had two 2nds and a 5th in G1 competition.

Racing / G1 Cotillion

A nice field for the Cotillion..

Must be because of the 1$ million purse?

With Close Hatches opting for the Spinster that leaves the Beldame wide open for Princess of Sylmar.

I had also forgotten the Cotillion was 8.5 and not 9 furlongs.

This is a great chance for Untappable to cement her status as three year old champion female, if she hasn't already. However, Stopchargingmaria and Sweet Reason promise to offer a stern challenge.

International Racing / November 4, 2014 Melbourne Cup
September 11, 2014, 08:06:26 AM
Well, in the US its election day - but in Australia is the contesting of the Melbourne Cup...and some earlier indications with the nominations of what the field may look like...with a number of European invaders...which could make it a strong field...

Dandino will be there for two races in the Spring Festival trying the Caulfield Cup as well as the Melbourne Cup.
Cavalryman for Godolophin is expected to be there...
Estimate is nominated.
A sentimental favorite of mine, Red Cadeaux is there too.
Aidan O'Brien has Kingfisher
Jockey turned trainer, Johnny Murtagh has two entries with Mutual Regard and Royal Diamond.
German bred Protectionist after his win in the Group 2 Prix Kergorlay (3000m) at Deauville.
Another Irish entry is Pale Mimosa by Melbourne Cup winning trainer Dermot weld who won with Vintage Crop and Media Puzzle.
Sea The Moon is another European invader...
New Zealand star Silent Achiever...

They will all be taking on local entry The Offer who promises to be installed as the favorite...

Racing / 2014 Horse Of The Year Candidates
September 08, 2014, 09:03:40 AM
Well, its hard to believe, but most of the racing for the year has taken place already. All that is really left is fall racing and the Breeders Cup Championship which for Horse of the Year purposes will likely mean not more than two races for the top candidates - possibly three.

I listed Close Hatches because if she were to take on the males and win I think she could make an excellent case for HOTY honors. However, I do not think that is in her plans.

Palace Malice is retired - but I have him at the top because he is still a worthy leader in my book - with his accomplishments so far this year.
