American Pharoah has won the online readers' poll for Sports Illustrated's 2015 Sportsman of the Year, topping 11 other candidates across all major sports as the one who embodied the spirit of sportsmanship and achievement this year.
The three-year-old colt ended a 37-year Triple Crown drought with a huge win in the Belmont Stakes—the 12th Triple Crown winner in history. He completed his career with a 6 1/2 length win in the $5 million Breeders' Cup Classic in his final start before heading off to the breeding shed.
American Pharoah won 47% of the vote when the poll closed on Saturday night. The Kansas City Royals came in second place with 29% of the vote and Lionel Messi finished in third place with 6% of the vote. American Pharoah also beat out Stephen Curry (4%), Jordan Spieth (3%), Simone Biles (2%) and Carli Lloyd (2%).

As of today. American Pharoah has 45% of the vote far outpacing the KC Royals for the lead. Hope he goes wire to wire .

More importantly, hopefully the SI editors who are the final arbiters of who wins the award realize the fact that American Pharoah's accomplishments far outweigh those of the Kansas City Royals no matter what the vote tally shows.
In closing the voting today at SI, American Pharoah has 47% of the vote to 29% for the KC Royals. Every year there is a world series winner, but not every year ( 37 years ) do we have a triple crown in horse racing.
A shame the editors had him lose out to Serena Williams. Oh well.
Sports Illustrated is full of Bull shoot. Geez the horse wins not by a tiny amount, but over 100,000 votes. And they pick someone who gets 1% of the vote. Pure Bullshoot.
If you read the explanation it lets you see the truth of it all between the lines.
They were not looking for a Sportsperson of the Year, they were looking for a story behind the story.
While American Pharoah had that and more, they found Serena Williams' story much more compelling as they note.
There is absolutely no other way to explain what SI did. And guess what. They will do it again and again. They do not care because horse racing does not make them money.
But people will hopefully think better of wasting their time betting in a fan poll. LOL

Me either. And hopefully when they see their online polling drop significantly then they'll see how dumb they were.
They could easily remedy this problem by giving a fan award and SI award, but that would take too much foresight.
