Racing / Del Mar Pacific Classic
July 29, 2016, 10:05:37 AM
Melatonin came down with a temperature this week that prevented trainer David Hofmans from working him as scheduled Friday morning at Del Mar, while possibly jeopardizing his status for the Grade 1 Pacific Classic on Aug. 20.

Winner of the Santa Anita Handicap and Gold Cup at Santa Anita, Melatonin has not been ruled out of the Pacific Classic yet. "We have time," Hofmans said Friday, adding that he needs to "get three works into him" in order to take on California Chrome and possibly Beholder in the $1 million Pacific Classic.

Although he has not worked since winning the Gold Cup on June 22, Melatonin does not typically require an extensive workout pattern to prepare for a race. He has been training regularly, but the Friday workout would have been his first breeze in preparation for the Pacific Classic in three weeks.

Your Dad sells his business and has some cash on-hand.

You are 25 and finished Vet school and had barn jobs for Mike Mitchell and Cliff SIse.

Dad tells you, go get your Trainers license and I'll set you up with some inventory.

He proceeds to spend $2.1 million and off you go!

Congrats again Shelbe Ruis, you're now 2/11....

Racing / Making The Morning Line
July 14, 2016, 10:51:08 AM
So, what does it take to be a good morning line maker at a premier meet?

A good handicapper?
A good insider?
A good race caller???

The reason I ask is because I just saw that Travis Stone is going to hang up his binoculars used for calling races and instead do the morning line for the upcoming Saratoga meeting.

Would Larry Collmus make a good morning line maker, or Trevor Denman, both excellent race callers, but morning line makers?

Just thinking outloud that maybe NYRA missed the boat on this one and should've given the task to their in-house expert Andy, no?

Racing / So, Why Did You Geld Me?
July 10, 2016, 09:28:28 AM
Okay, so you spent $6,500 for a stud fee and I was the result.
I waited until I was 3 to try racing.
I ran once in January and stunk up the joint at 4/1 odds in a straight maiden event where I finished 10th beaten some 20 lengths.
I ran for the second time in March and there must've been some great clocker reports as I was hammered in the wagering down to 7/5, again in a straight maiden event, and I did everything asked of me making every pole a winning one, drawing away to win by 2 1/2 lengths in a very good time for the 6 1/2 furlongs.
I've collected some $33,000 in my bank account.

And what do I get in return.......you gelded me since that last race!?!?!?!?!?!
Huh, what's up with that?
Sincerely,
TRIBAL FIGHTER

Let's assume for just a second that you had $30,000 plus expenses to invest without any cash flow problems.

Would you consider this a good or bad investment?

Claiming a 3YO Maiden entered for the 4th time today.

Ran against straight maidens first time out in February of his 3yo year routing and finished 4th.
Then dropped in to a $75,000 maiden claimers mile and finished 3rd at 7/5 odds in March.
Tried the same level again in June at 3/5 odds and finished 4th beaten 13 lengths.

Connections----Gary West and Bob Baffert
Breeding Super Saver $65K/Charity Girl
Cost---$260,000 at the Sept Keeneland sale.

We shall see, curious what you think.
Doug O'Neil won the two-way shake today while he finished 2nd beaten 4 lengths at 6/5

Where do you think he'll be spotted next?

Collmus steps down from Gulfstream announcing job

Larry Collmus has stepped down as the wintertime racetrack announcer at Gulfstream Park. No replacement has been named.

Collmus, 49, who began calling the races at Gulfstream in January 2007, cited the desire to lessen his workload, which includes calling races at the New York Racing Association tracks -- Aqueduct, Belmont, and Saratoga -- seven months of the year as well as being the voice of the Triple Crown and Breeders' Cup. Collmus informed Gulfstream Park management of his decision Wednesday morning.

In case you missed it.....

Eclipse Champion Nyquist, who has been idle since running third in the Preakness Stakes May 21 and who was undefeated in eight career starts following his victory in the Kentucky Derby May 7, will work five furlongs prior to Saturday's first race, according to trainer Doug O'Neill.

Vyjack is listed on the worktab as being under the care of Bill Mott, but he's actually trained by Phil D'Amato now on the west coast.

Shadwell Stable's multiple grade II winner Mohaymen returned to the worktab June 23 with a three-furlong breeze at the Greentree Training Center adjacent to Saratoga Race Course.

Big Chief Racing, James Justice, and Billy Shelton's Swipe, who underwent throat surgery after a sixth-place finish in the April 16 Coolmore Lexington Stakes (gr. III), is set to make his return in a June 26 allowance race at Belmont Park.
