Title: Notes On A Scorecard
Post by: stark on June 23, 2016, 08:56:52 PM
In case you missed it.....

Eclipse Champion Nyquist, who has been idle since running third in the Preakness Stakes May 21 and who was undefeated in eight career starts following his victory in the Kentucky Derby May 7, will work five furlongs prior to Saturday's first race, according to trainer Doug O'Neill.

Vyjack is listed on the worktab as being under the care of Bill Mott, but he's actually trained by Phil D'Amato now on the west coast.

Shadwell Stable's multiple grade II winner Mohaymen returned to the worktab June 23 with a three-furlong breeze at the Greentree Training Center adjacent to Saratoga Race Course.

Big Chief Racing, James Justice, and Billy Shelton's Swipe, who underwent throat surgery after a sixth-place finish in the April 16 Coolmore Lexington Stakes (gr. III), is set to make his return in a June 26 allowance race at Belmont Park.

Why do you say he is getting no respect?
He was 3rd choice in the wagering in the derby  :chickendance:

Bob Baffert and Juddmonte look to have a very good three-year-old in Arrogate. The Unbridled's Song colt, a $560,000 Keeneland September yearling purchase, may have missed the spring classics but, the way he's progressing, we may see him in some summer sophomore stakes. Baffert certainly likes him:
Juddmonte Farms' Arrogate had the look of something special June 24 at Santa Anita Park.
The 3-year-old Unbridled's Song colt won a 1 1/16-mile allowance by 5 1/4 lengths under Rafael Bejarano and trainer Bob Baffert expressed lofty aspiration for him after the race.
"We've got a lot of options with him. ... The Jim Dandy (gr. II) is there. ... The plan is to get him to the Breeders' Cup (Classic, gr. I)," Baffert said.

Randomness in case you missed it.....

San Felipe Stakes winner Danzing Candy worked six furlongs in 1:13 for Bob Baffert, who has the son of Twirling Candy set for next Saturday's Grade III Affirmed Stakes.

Firing Line, second to Triple Crown king American Pharoah in the 2015 Kentucky Derby, worked five furlongs in 1:00.20 for Simon Callaghan, who has the son of Line of David on course for a meeting with California Chrome in the San Diego Handicap on July 23

I wonder if Kayla is returning to Australia permanently? I think she had a hard time cracking the top tier of riders here in SoCal, although IIRC, her riding was interrupted for a while when she had a child. IMHO, she's a fine jockey, but this riding colony is tough.
I hope she has great success back in Oz.

That's true, but getting an allowance race to fill might be tough and there probably is only time for one race before going in the stated goal which is the Pacific Classic.  Firing Line probably won't be fully cranked, lest he end up over the top for the big one.

That's true and, yes, with only time for one prep before the PC, then why not make it a stakes race? Maybe he'll get lucky and Chrome will have an off day on what will also be his return race.

On Sunday, July 10, closing day of the Santa Anita Spring Meet, Hall of Fame jockeys Gary Stevens and Mike Smith will be available from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. to sign one-of-a-kind posters featuring three-time champion mare Beholder and the undefeated filly Songbird, arguably the two best (dirt) females in the country.

Signings will take place in the shaded saddling enclosure. Families are invited to bring the kids, as Santa Anita mascots, Winnie and Lucky, will be on-hand to greet fans and offer Beholder's favorite treat, peppermints!

Drefong, a three-year-old colt by Gio Ponti, just won a 6 1/2 furlong AOC at Santa Anita so easily that I'm pretty sure that Bob is going to be stepping this talented colt up in both class and distance for his next out.

A winner of 68 stakes races in his Del Mar career, 10th most ever, veteran jockey Patrick Valenzuela was denied reinstatement by the California Horse Racing Board. Valenzuela, 53, can re-apply in one year, at which time he will be advised to present evidence of rehabilitation, including the results of alcohol and drug testing performed on a regular basis, not less than once a week. The ruling is another sad chapter in the saga of the sometimes brilliant but also troubled career of Valenzuela, who started in 1980 as an 18-year-old and won 764 races at the seaside oval, a mark eclipsed by only Hall of Famers Laffit Pincay Jr. (1,011), Bill Shoemaker (889) and Chris McCarron (849).

That was pretty much the only ruling CHRB could make, given his history.  Probably should have ruled that the previous time around.

Sophomore colt Stradivari, contestant in two of this year's three Triple Crown races, was injured during training at Saratoga Friday morning. Breezing five furlongs in company with fellow Todd Pletcher trainee and Belmont Stakes runner-up Destin, Stradivari was pulled up sharply during the gallop out by exercise rider Patti Krotenko. He was vanned off the main track.
According to the Daily Racing Form, Stradivari suffered a lateral condylar fracture of his right front leg. He has been transported to the Rood and Riddle Equine Hospital in Saratoga to be evaluated for surgery.
"The X-rays were not as bad as we first feared, the sesamoids are intact," trainer Todd Pletcher said. "Just waiting to hear back."

     Read more: http://www.paulickreport.com/news/thoroughbred-racing/stradivari-injured-workout-friday-morning-saratoga-possibly-facing-surgery/

I hope the MdO colt recovers completely, but I have doubts that we will get to see him on the track again.  :(

That's a more concrete example of my feeling about this crop... as it is right at this moment they strike me as a decent enough group with no real standout. Possibly Exaggerator, but I could see a completely different Haskell result if they went 4/5 second slower during that opening quarter of the Haskell. The biggest positive I take from that list is Amer Freedom running the top TF # by running second. He's the most likely winner imho if that opening quarter went a bit slower. Just pure conjecture at this point though...

Jockey Victor Espinoza will not ride here next week. He's off to Japan to participate in the World All Star Jockey competition next weekend at Sapporo Race Course.

Produced by the Japan Racing Association – the group that presented Saturday's Del Mar Handicap – the competition features jockeys from around the globe over a two-day period.

"He finished second in it in 2001," said Espinoza's agent, Brian Beach. "He's been offered the opportunity again the last couple years but this year the timing is better, coming after the Pacific Classic."

Veteran race caller, Frank Mirahmadi, will be the full-time track announcer at Golden Gate Fields when fall racing begins on October 20. The affable announcer, known for his superb race calling and witty impersonations, brings over 20 years of professional experience to the bayside oval.

The 48-year-old Los Angeles native will purchase his one-way ticket to Golden Gate Fields after completing the current season at Monmouth Park in New Jersey. Mirahmadi's first day at Golden Gate Fields will be on his 49th birthday.

Mirahmadi will be replacing Angela Hermann at Golden Gate Fields, who recently accepted her dream job as a paddock analyst at Santa Anita Park in Arcadia, California. Hermann will make her debut in Southern California on September 30, when The Great Race Place opens for its annual autumn meet.

Good move all around.  Mirahmadi didn't get his dream job but there are worse things than living in the Bay Area.  I'm glad they found a soft landing spot for Angela Hermann.  In my opinion she was out of her element as a race caller.

Nothing important or valuable, just observations from morning workouts at SA today.
Parking lot packed!
First person I saw was Steve Coburn standing with a bunch of Chromies, if that was his dog (corgi?) he was appropriately named Cowboy.
Stood down by the gap at the head of the stretch for an hour, within earshot of Baffert and others.
Maybe 10 feet away from the BC gallopers on their way back to the barn, jocks givings numerous thumbs-up to connections along the rail.
Thanks to whoever decided for them to wear their names on the saddle cloths, would be nice every day!
I don't think there were any serious workouts, just gallops, and one thing caught me by surprise.....without exception every time there was a washy horse broken out in sweat, it was an east coaster or from across the pond, not a west coast based horse, and there were a lot of them!
Jill Baffert wants extra mayo on her breakfast sandwich, pay attention Bob!
An exception to the washout report, Oscar Performance was spotted in the walking ring, picture perfect but a handful for the two female handlers, not being bad, just on the muscle as they say.
John McCririck of London fame spotted wearing a red Trump Make America Great Again cap, seemed worthy of a LOL.
Dortmund really is big when he's only 10 feet away!
Sorry but some guys (drfjayprivman) just look like bums in the morning.
Forbes Money Lister and Spendthrift Farms B. Wayne Hughes just blends right in, appears very unassuming.
If that was Chris McCarron, he's looking older and not dieting every day?
HRRN had their table set up and a steady stream of interviewees.
TVG hosts were running around everywhere, Scott H. in suit-tie-tennis shoes and Britney Eurton is a tiny lil one, Simon in a olde t-shirt.
Horns sounded 3 or 4 times for a loose horse on the track.  Trainers yelling at their jocks to just stop by the rail until its safe.
Much more, but I don't get paid for this nonsense :lmao:

There's no place I'd rather be at sunrise!

Is it just me, or does it seem that everything Simon Callaghan trains seems sore?  He lost a two-year-old at Del Mar a week ago Sunday, who was wearing four wraps, right in front of the stands.  Now that can happen to anybody, but........  I just wonder if Mandella could have brought Firing Line back.
