Ron the Greek is out of the Classic with a quarter crack. News broken by Jennie Rees.  Really unfortunate.

Racing / Jeff Lukas: Out of the Darkness (SI longform)
October 30, 2013, 08:14:31 AM
Superb in-depth article by Tim Layden on Jeff's struggle to create a new life, following the catastrophic injuries he received when Tabasco Cat ran him down.  Lots of photos and video. D. Wayne and the rest of the family; his racing colleagues (Pletcher, Stewart, McLaughlin, etc.); the doctor who saved his life -- were all interviewed for the story.

Among the things I love about this: there's no "Oh, look! A cute girl can be a jockey!!" nonsense. The ad treats her as a serious athlete.

Oooh what a gorgeous guy! Thanks for the great pic!

He was flashy, but  light-bodied, almost skinny, as a 3yo. He's 6 now, and all grown up.  :)

Wild Turkey is doing a series of ads called "#nevertamed"; this is The Rider, featuring Rosie Napravnik. Watch full-screen if you can.

COUNTRY STAR used to do that in the gate before a race. Highly talented but had more than one screw loose.

Racing / Re: Cuomo Calls Aqueduct ‘A Waste’
October 27, 2013, 08:08:38 PM
I empathize with those New Yorkers who love Aqueduct, but the place is a mess. It would cost millions to make it a place people would actually want to attend for something other than a big stakes. The writing has been on the wall ever since Cuomo decided to involve himself in horse racing and slots in NY. The real estate is simply too valuable. Unfortunately, I think the horse has left the barn on this one.

Fans of DYNAFORMER might want to keep an eye on his son INNOVATION ECONOMY, who displayed an impressive and long late move breaking his maiden in BEL 1, on turf. Have no idea why he went off at 20-1.

Racing / Ken Ramsey's big bet pays off
October 26, 2013, 10:27:21 PM
Another good story about the Ramseys gambling pretty much everything on Kitten's Joy as a stud.

http://www.courier-journal.com/article/20131025/SPORTS08/310250104/Ken-Ramsey-s-big-bet-pays-off-Kitten-s-Joy-impact-Breeders-Cup

Ken Ramsey: "I don't want to rust out. I want to burn out."

BTW, am I the only person who remembers that Ramsey was fined and suspended in 2005 for trying to bribe another owner into scratching his horse? He plays hard, man. ;-)
