Title: Tackiest BC coverage ever - thanks NBC
Post by: jjacks1 on November 02, 2013, 06:06:46 PM
Where do I start? The crappy sound mix? The botox babe gyrating for the camera singing that horrid song? She ruined the post parade for me. Every time I tried to turn the sound back on she was flapping and screeching.
If this is what horse racing has to do to attract fans, I quit.
The morons that run the Breeders Cup need to think outside the box - they can't out-do the Kentucky Derby by borrowing the Derby traditions and sleazing them up. Tackiest Breeders Cup Prime Time show EVER. Seriously thinking about skipping the TV coverage next year and just reading the DRF charts afterwards.

I chose to watch the races on computer, on the Breeders Cup site.  They had the HRTV feed all day.  Obviously, lots of talking heads with opinions, if you like that sort of stuff, but I was impressed with their insights all day long (I don't have HRTV).

So, next year just watch it on your computer if you don't like NBC's effort to tailor the show to appeal to more than just hard core horse racing fans.

Like I said in another thread,  I like Kristin Chenoweth,  but she murdered that song.  Sinatra sang it best, and the range is such that it really should be sung by a male.

I watched HRTV until the Classic. I should've stayed there.

I watched the SA simulcast feed (via XPressbet), which was excellent.  The very knowledgeable SA handicappers, plus the always spot-on Trevor Denman call.  For whatever reason, the NBC Sports Network "live" feed was actually tape-delayed by several minutes.  So a couple times, if I wanted to see an instant replay immediately after the simulcast (like Groupie Doll's gutsy stretch run) I just turned back to NBC-SN's "live" feed and watched it again.

I thought NBC-SN's coverage was okay, but when it switched to NBC for the Classic, it really got dumbed down.  I'm sorry, but I really am not interested in who Joan Rivers is picking in the BCC!

WOW and LOCAL NBC has Breeders Cup on SPorts = what do they report and show video of?????

BC Classic

Breakdown in Juv Fillies

DQ of She's A Tiger

MUCH more focus on the negative than the Positive - and BC and horse racing get more Black eyes =  :headshake:

Glad I'm not the only one that noticed this... my dad thought something was wrong with his TV when the coverage shifted to NBC. Sounded like they were broadcasting out of a tin can.

I like her too, but I was very disappointed with her rendition of "The Best is Yet To Come".....oh my.   I know she's a better singer than that but it sounded almost like she was in the wrong key or something.   Toni sounded great singing the anthem I thought though.

Ballerina, this is what Trevor said when he called the Breeders' Cup Classic:

"Mucho Macho Man just keeps on finding on the lead, Will Take Charge, a late run, woooah, that's close!
Mucho Macho Man, the more they asked, the more he gave, Will Take Charge was right there, as was Declaration of War, in a classic Breeders' Cup Classic!", (Denman, Breeders' Cup Classic 2013 for the on-track and HRRN broadcast).

By looking at the words from his quote, Ballerina, Trevor gave a very powerful description while calling the 2013 Breeders' Cup Classic for the on-track and online radio broadcast.

Why did I know I was going to get a lecture? :lmao:

I don't like Trevor Denman's voice.  It gets on my nerves.  You're just going to have to learn that not everyone embraces your icon.

And on the bright side, nobody got arrested including the fans who prefer to listen to Trevor Denman's race calls, nobody got arrested at the Santa Anita Autumn Meet on Breeders' Cup Friday and Breeders' Cup Saturday.

XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

I'm with Ballerina on this one.

As a SoCal resident, I have long enjoyed Trevor's calls.

But I now prefer others to him, most notably Collmus, who is top notch.  I also think John Dooley of Arlington is terrific.

It is just a matter of taste for different styles.

I thought there was something wrong with my ears. LOL Finally asked Hubby if he heard it too! You couldn't hear the broadcasters over the ambient crowd noise. How could they get it right on NBCSN then screw up so badly on NBC?
And Joan River - OMG who cares?
Beating head smilie coming up. It's a good one!

Just because a race call is delivered in an English accent doesn't make it superior.

To be honest with you, I don't have OCD in my system, I am very normal ever since that day I was born. I try to tell jjacks1 about Trevor's nationality because he didn't know what Trevor's nationality is. Many racing fans know what Trevor's nationality is.

Ballerina, with all due respect...differences of opinion are one thing.  But one of the reasons this Board exists is because a lot of us wanted to get away from all the personal insults on the TBC Board.  Thank you.

Zen, you don't know what my future career is, and I am sure Bookman, Ballerina know what my future career is. My future career is to become a professional race caller after graduating from the university. Before hearing the news that Hollywood Park will be closed at the end of January 2014, my future career path is to start out calling races as Trevor's back up at Barretts At Fairplex in Pomona. Then, I work as the Assistant Announcer at Hollywood Park. After, I work as the Announcer from Hollywood Park. After Trevor retires, I work as the Announcer from Santa Anita and Hollywood Park. If I am that good, I am hoping to announce the Triple Crown and the Breeders' Cup for NBC Sports after Trevor retires.  However, after hearing the news about Hollywood Park, my career path is to start out calling races as a back up announcer at Barretts At Fairplex. I would either work as the race caller from Arlington Park, Golden Gate Fields (part time), or a racetrack outside of California, which is owned by the same company that owns the Santa Anita Racetrack. After Trevor retires, I work as the race caller from Santa Anita. If I am that good, I am hoping to call the Triple Crown for NBC Sports. After Trevor retires, I am hoping that my Breeders' Cup race calls  will be available on NBC Sports.   :rhrse:

I've got to give Kristin a break here.  We may have heard musical instruments during the song, but she didn't.  She was winging it.  How can anyone deliver a good song with the background noise she was hearing?  She is a dynomite entertainer and a very good, powerful singer.  AND, she is as cute as a button.  I didn't think it was that bad.  Rather listen to her than some of that awful caterwaulling by Jennifer Hudson and a few others I could name who sing that way all the time.

What made them choose that song anyway? Someone suggested "Thanks for the Memories," what with all the horse retirements after the BC.   ;)

And mch, I apologize for being snarky, BUT in one of your posts you said something about being "Assistant Announcer at Hollywood Park." How can that be the case when the track is closing?

And don't get me wrong, I love Kristin Chenoweth, that's why listening to the awful version of that song was so painful. I go out of my way to watch her when she's on TV (including switching over to NBC to watch her). Perhaps in the future it would be a good idea, what with the sound issues, to just have singers lip sync. I wouldn't have a problem with that.

Petty bickering and namecalling on the internet has absolutely nothing to do with the decline of horseracing.
It's just a sign of the times, nothing more.

If you want to see hostility, go to a football forum...........this pales in comparison.

I haven't read this thread, so what I'm about to say has nothing to do with anything said in it specifically ... but as far as the sentiment of what you just said ... I 100% concur ... I'm at this board instead of the other because I'm done with the vileness by those who are the bad seeds there ...

So far I've found this board to have a much better tone ... my hope is for that to continue and for this board to thrive with those who enjoy constructive diatribe and being treated with respect.

You are such a sweetie, Tin Man, thank you!  And I can promise that we will do our best to make sure the board stays positive and happy. There are enough negative things in life - why bring them to a hobby you enjoy? I can get enough rudeness is real life - I come here to  get away from it.  :)
Funny thing about nasty Internet people - if they were looking at you face-to-face, they would never be as nasty as they are when they can hide behind the "Net. Probably because they would be afraid of the black eye they might get!  :lmao:

And people ask why this sport is on the decline?

It's the people, stupid, not the horses!

For some reason, thought this forum might be different.  Oh well .....

I'm on Vic's side.   :thanks:

Don't give up on us yet dear! The Best Is Yet To Come!  ;D

Have the highest of High Hopes with The Best Is Yet To Come for the gutsy jjacks and Zenyatta!  You two have worked hard to make this a friendly place ... and we really do appreciate it.

Again, my sincere thanks.

Why did I know I was going to get a lecture? :lmao:

I don't like Trevor Denman's voice.  It gets on my nerves.  You're just going to have to learn that not everyone embraces your icon.

We're having construction work done to our house so I recorded the BC and blasted through the majority of the broadcast while stopping for the races and a couple of other things.  We watched Toni Braxton do the anthem (very nice and unlike James Taylor, at the World Series, she remembered what song she was performing).  My wife is a fan of Broadway performers in general and Kristin Chenoweth in particular but thought she went off the rails a bit with the ending of her piece.  My wife looked at me at the end of the Classic and said "Who is that race caller?!  He seems to just go up a couple of octaves on the final turn arbitrarily."  I explained he's quite well thought of and calls for all of the NBC major broadcasts as well as his regular gigs at Monmouth and Gulfstream.  She asked me what I thought of him and I said he's the perfect network caller as he has the perfect blend of competency and milk toast.  So it's ironic that two of my favorite callers--Michael Wrona and Robert Geller--would never get such a gig because their witty calls can sometimes verge into the realm of tacky.  Then in what is being billed here as the Tackiest Coverage Ever one of the leaders in the coverage is actually the antithesis of tacky.

I found that the "primetime" section of the BC telecast attempted too much glitz and glamor with marginal celebrities and reporters we've never heard of.

I'm not sure who decided the Breeders' Cup needs a song. To me it's a 3rd rate knock off of the Triple Crown races who are really just a knock off of the Derby.

My Old Kentucky home really works before the Derby. People get it, it's nostalgic, appropriate and emotional. It's a fitting anthem for the event like "you'll never walk alone" prior to a liverpool match. The song fits the event.

All of the other songs before races just seem awkwardly contrived and the BC Classic theme song is by far the worst of the lot. I don't think the song fits the mood at all. In my opinion people are looking for an anthem if they want any song at all. "The Best Is Yet To Come" is nothing like an anthem.

Forgot where I asked this question, so I'll ask again.

What happened to Tony Bennett to sing "The Best Is Yet To Come" at this year's BC?  Remember reading at PR earlier in the year that he would be the one, or I thought I did!

That's the trouble with the older folks, health issues always something to consider.  Hope he's alright.

Me too. I think he would have been the better singer got the song.  :)

I don't think he was supposed to sing this year.
He did at the 2012 Breeders' Cup.

NBCSN's coverage was pretty good...mostly horses, races and the people who were involved with the horses. But when the coverage for the Classic switched over to the network....good grief!
Bad singing (sorry, Kristin, but that was not your best), silly celebrities, foolish fashions, Joan Rivers?!? Just looking at her makes me want to gag...her voice is worse...so why did someone at NBC think viewers wanted to hear her pick for the race?
I think that the NBC producers were convinced by some "experts" (who clearly know nothing about horse racing) that the race coverage should be treated like an awards show, instead of a sporting event. The only thing missing was a red carpet.
I'm reading that ratings for the coverage are down. After Saturday's miserable mishmash of a show, I can't imagine that many people are going to want to tune in next year.
If the whole thing moves to NBCSN next year, that would be fine with me...the cable station's tone was much more sport-oriented...but that's because I have the channel. I think lots of fans don't.

I couldn't agree with you more!  :) But the problem is lots of people don't get NBCSN and with my old cable company, Time Warner, it was a whole package add on. (God forbid you should be allowed to add just ONE channel). Luckily I switched to Direct TV and its included in our sports package. Time Warner =

I thought NBCSN did a good job of covering the BC races. But when I switched over to NBC for the Classic coverage I almost thought I'd gotten the wrong channel, as there was little talk about the races, just cameo shots by Joan Rivers and a bunch of others who didn't need to be there.

Really wish Bright House would offer at least one horse racing channel. But no. I've sent in suggestions, made requests to their customer service reps and gotten . . . nothing.

Was thinking the same thing with the different coverage- didn't turn NBC on until they were loading into the gate.

I'm in agreement.

TVG was better.  So was the streaming from BC's site.   The 'horse' channels seem to get it...I'm watching some old footage on TVG now...pretty cool.
