As a rule I look for live longshots... always on the hunt for value. If I can't find one and the race seems chalky I skip it unless I'm playing horizontal bets (which is less common for me). If I feel the favorite is really vulnerable and there is a viable alternative, then I play the live longshot across or box with a couple of others for the exacta or tri. If the chalk looks strong, but there is a better price that might run well, then maybe a larger place/show bet or strictly use underneath in exotics. I don't really have a concrete game plan though...
