Title: Three year olds returning as four year olds
Post by: Man o Taz on January 14, 2014, 09:19:22 AM
Revolutionary was my top Kentucky Derby horse. He had a stellar return in an allowance race at Gulfstream Park. I am excited to see him in the Donn Handicap.

Fury Kapcori has always been one of my favorites since I saw him run 2nd in the Cash Call Futurity in 2012. He's a grandson of Go For Gin and I always thought he had a beautiful, effortless running style.

Palace Malice is a fun horse to watch. When I thought he would do well he didn't and when I didn't he did. This son of Curlin should be equally fun to watch as a four year old. He just had his first work of the year I believe at Palm Meadows yesterday.

Power Broker - a grandson of Wild Again who I really liked - has not had any works. I did not hear that he was retired. He was second in the Haskell. He was another of my top Derby horses. I hope he is back in 2014.

Will Take Charge was never one of my favorite last year, other than to look at, since he never seemed to impress on the TC trail. However, his late season efforts were among the best of any horses and he demonstrated a durability that is almost as impressive as race performances.

I'm certain I'll think of more.

Itsmyluckyday - Has returned to training and recorded his second work at Palm Meadows at 3 furlongs in 36.2 - his first was at 36 on 12/31. I am very excited to see this son of Lawyer Ron perhaps in the Gulfstream Sprint Championship, Carter Handicap, Pimlico Special, Met Mile and the Iselin if all goes well. I am just guessing here - but I think he is ideal for these races.

Black Onyx is black in training his last workout being at Palm Meadows on the turf at six furlongs.

Normandy Invasion is also training well at Palm Meadows up to 4f now.

Mylute according to some is pointed to a couple Fairgrounds races but I can't find any works info.

Were Java's War and I've Struck a Nerve retired?

Two bad. The only solace I have is that I got to see him race twice in person...at Belmont in the Easy Goer and at Monmouth in the Haskell.

Who knows what might have been with him had he remained healthy.

Those Pulpit sons are in high demand.

I have not heard any word on Vyjack, Titletown Five, Capo Bastone, Incognito and Frac Daddy...

Sunland Derby winner Govenor Charlie was in the Strub...

And Baffert's 2013 San Vicente Stakes winner Shak'in It Up is back as well in that race with a winning effort.

Golden Soul is working at the Fairgrounds.

Last I heard, Vyjack was still rehabbing at Fair Hill, and was expected to return to Rudy Rodriguez' barn in...<calculating from date of article> mid to late January?

Thanks Catalina. Will look for him in the next couple of months. Perhaps if I see Mr. Rodriguez at Aqueduct the next time I'm there I'll ask him.

That article is great. Sorry I missed it but it talks about all the Debry prep winners and what they are doing...

It seems like Goldencents will be back - I thought he was retired...

And Black Onyx...

And Java's War...

And Flashback...

And Dice Flavor...

And Super Ninety Nine...

And maybe I've Struck A Nerve...

And Lines of Battle as Helene Super Star

And Winning Cause

Will all be back in addition to the others mentioned...

Oh no ... He's just getting a couple of months of much deserved R & R ... No worries.

He's gonna have a monster year this year!

Wish Points Offthebench were still around to go up against him. That would have been a fun rivalry to see.   :-\

Is O'Neil really going to keep sprinting Goldencents?  I think he's much better around two turns, I'm not saying 10f necessarily but he looks like he hangs going short.  He looks much better to me when he can control the pace.  That is why I was so puzzled by the way he was ridden in the Preakness.

I'll be glad to see him on the track.

And hope he makes it out East.

Perhaps he'll start with 7 furlong efforts and work up to a mile - so I can see him take on Sahara Sky in the Met Mile out East...and then maybe the Whitney or Woodward if that works out well.

Per their Facebook page ... Goldencents just showed up back at the barn yesterday ... So I guess R & R is already over. I wish it had been a month longer. Oh well ... hopefully it was long enough.

That would be quite ironic - two West coast horses dueling in the East - kind of like Sahara Sky and Handsome Mike coming out for last year's Met Mile.

Apparently Itsmyluckyday is possible for the Gulfstream Park H. where he may meet Palace Malice, Revolutionary, among others... tough spot for the comeback off a long layoff, but the connections say he is 110% right now. Good luck to him- he's one of my favorite 3yos fro last year.

Thanks for the update.

Normandy Invasion looked impressive in his 2014 debut.

I knew I should have visited Mr. Plesa's barn when I was in Florida.

I suspect Falling Sky may be very tough in this spot. Depending on who else is entered he has a recency edge on the other top contenders.
Title: Re: Three year olds returning as four year olds
Post by: Man o Taz on March 05, 2014, 11:49:45 AM
I agree. Other than his maiden, Palace Malice does not have a win at less than 9 furlongs.

And Falling Sky does not have one beyond 8.5 furlongs. Thus, at shorter distances he seems the better horse - but Mr. Pletcher seems to think that Palace is primed for this.

I wonder what's next for Revolutionary.

He looked incredible defeating Falling Sky in that allowance race, then he finished 7th in the Donn Handicap.

Do you try him at shorter distances, like the Carter Handicap? Or longer, like the Brooklyn Handicap? He's won at a mile, 8.5 furlongs and 9 furlongs. And been 3rd and 5th in races of 10 furlongs or longer.

I, personally, would love to see him try once more in SoCal ... but that's just me being greedy.

Then, if it doesn't go well, station on the East Coast again. He really blossomed once he went out there and obviously, thus far, prefers that circuit.

You can have him for one more race. Then I want him back. (SMILE)

I hope Revolutionary improves in his next outing to show the form in his return to racing before the poor showing in the Donn Handicap.

I just read that he and Mylute are out of the New Orleans Handicap.

And Itsmyluckyday from his 4th place finish in the Gulfstream Park Handicap.

I didn't even pay any attention to the New Orleans Handicap 8 days ago...

Palace Malice and Normandy Invasion finished 1,2 and Golden Soul was also in the race finishing 5th.

I guess Normandy Invasion should get back on the work tab this week.

It also looks like four more three year olds from last year will be entering the Oaklawn Handicap this Saturday...

Wish I could make it down there but its Easter weekend.

Didn't matter - he won it going away putting him back in the winner's circle.

It will be nice to see him in the northeast.

I wonder if he may point to the Pimlico Special and the Met Mile.

And how about Vyjack making his comeback at Aqueduct with a win in a 7 furlong allowance race...

We have a couple of four year olds going in this weekend's Alysheba Stakes...including Golden Soul, Normandy Invasion, Mylute and the defending three year old champion Will Take Charge.

Hear the Ghost runs in an allowance today at SA (race 6). He goes turf-dirt after two placings on turf. Hope he fares well, but I won't be betting him at a likely short price.

Thanks for the heads up.

I am confused about what they have planned for him.

He definitely runs well - when you have a horse of his caliber - why not put him in stakes races? Are they trying to get his confidence built up again?

He seems to run as good in stakes races as he does in allowance company finishing in the money...

I am sure there is a plan. I just hope he is in the winner's circle again soon.

Hear the Ghost - second again.

Itsmyluckday looked much the best...

They were considering the Metropolitan Mile for him next but more likely he'll go in the Salvator Mile...on July 5th.

Here is the race:

Actually wasn't a prediction Taz ... It came from "The Man" himself ... wish I could take credit for the prediction though. ;)

Nice field, but your boy is a beast now ... He'll romp!

Should be interesting seeing him go up against The Dude the rest of this year, after this one of course ...  :)

It should.

Game On Dude should be sharp for the HGC.

Of course, I have hopes that I might get to see Game On Dude out East running in the $1.5 million G1 Whitney.

After all, The Dude's connections have chased money before.

And I know it comes up three weeks before the Pacific Classic, but it is for more money than the Pacific Classi, over dirt which the Dude prefers to polytrack.

It would also go a long way to answering questions that the Dude can't ship and win against the best Eastern horses.

Just say'in.

Maybe if Fury is a beast in the HGC that will give Mr. Baffert pause to look East. Then again, Mr. Hollendorfer likes to ship. Maybe Fury goes in the Whitney. And if I could have them both...to dream.

I'm going to do it...use an emoticon...

;D

Furry...2nd to Clubhouse Ride.

I was very surprised that CR was allowed to get to the rail at the top of the stretch.

I wonder if Mr. Nakatani saw him coming on the inside.

If he had been stopped, Furry would have won.

C'est la vie.

Revolutionary is being pointed to the Stephen Foster and possibly the Whitney.

Revolutionary never got into the race it seems. Hopefully I'll get to see him in the Whitney...

Will Take Charge did not get much of a rest...before he was entered...

Well, Fury Kapcori had a hall of fame jockey on his back in the (Hollywood) Gold Cup. I do not know that it helped. The half in 45 and change...in a horse's first 10 furlong effort.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ADCx7NgCtd0

Eddie Olczyk can handicap...I think Paul LoDuca could take some lessons from him...with his picking the winners of the two big stakes races on NBC Sports...and my wife says that he did really well with the Triple Crown undercards as well.

I know there are likely trademark issues involved in taking races from track to track under the same name...but I wish the names belonged to the state racing associations and not the tracks themselves.

He looked excellent. Ran the mile in 1:34 and change. Geared down just before the wire and never looked to be running all out.
