I didn't even know about this until I got a phone call from a fellow member here. What a shame they kept such an obviously unsound horse in training for so long, especially since despite his lack of graded stakes wins he still could have gotten a few mares in foal with his royal breeding (do we want more unsound genes, though?). Regardless, what a loss. I had a bad feeling about this horse with all his stops and starts from the beginning.

Condolences to Mike Smith and all of Pointsoffthebench's connections and fans.  What a heartbreaking turn of events, Yakteen's first ever G1 winner, on the verge of running in the BC.

Tears here - as an Alydar fan I follow his progeny and really enjoyed watching Points Offthebench and felt that he had a good chance to win his race.
Then I read jjacks1 post and 2 of the 4 also have Alydar bloodlines.
May ALL who were listed RIP and condolences to all of their connections...

You are correct young lady. The pic of Hewitts was one of mine. I wasn't putting in photo credits yet then.

It's a damn shame to lose any of them, but this guy had really paid his dues and earned a LOT of money for his connections. The old guys(Hewitts was 9) really hold a soft spot with me ... and to die that way ... Ugh!

He won his last race ...

He leaves us with the following record ... May this old war horse rest in peace ... although I'd have much preferred he were resting at a farm for many, many years instead ... :(

Career Statistics:

Starts: 51
Firsts: 9
Seconds: 10
Thirds: 7

Rest in peace to Causewere Gamblers ... lost today at Santa Anita ... Race 3 ...

He was a 4 year old colt trained by Caesar Dominguez ... Who has last raced on August 16, 2012 until coming back to the track on January 26, 2014 ... THIS month he was making his 3rd start in 22 days ... dying in that start today ...

I think that's a little too much activity for a horse coming off of a 17 month layoff, personally ...

I hate it when people unretire horses, to see whether they can either squeeze a few more dollars out of them, or in the hope that some good hearted person with deep pockets is there to rescue the horse from its current owners and trainers.

There's too much death and bad news in this sport lately.  Santa Anita seems to single-handedly account for several fatalities per week these days, and that's just the ones we know about.

RIP Causewere Gamblers, Russian Silk, Notbyemyrules, and Vagabond Shoes.

La Jolla Cove who lost his life in the 2nd race at Santa Anita last Sunday ... He went wrong crossing the dirt on the 6 1/2 downhill turf course and became hobbled and dumped his jockey(Maldonado) was subsequently vanned off and ultimately euthanized due to fractured sesamoid in his left front.   :(

It was his debut start. He was a $275,000 purchase and ran for Ron Ellis.

I remember seeing her 1st race as a 2 year old at Hollywood Park. She was ALWAYS a tough, gritty runner who always gave her all ... She also had a VERY nice record ... Finishing in the trifecta in 14 of 19 career starts ...

Vicki Victoria lost her life last Thursday or Friday on the training track at Santa Anita after her workout. Apparently suffering a fatal heart attack ...

I remember seeing her 1st race as a 2 year old at Hollywood Park. She was ALWAYS a tough, gritty runner who always gave her all ... She also had a VERY nice record ... Finishing in the trifecta in 14 of 19 career starts ...

She was set to run in an Allowance/Optional Claiming race at SA this coming weekend after her very impressive win last out.

Career Statistics:

•Starts: 19
•Firsts: 4
•Seconds: 6
•Thirds: 4
•Earnings: $201,580

Here is a pic of her leaving the track after her win in her last race at SA on April 27th ...

This one hurts (A LOT) REST IN PEACE - What a shock

That she did ... Very gritty girl.

A friend of mine owned her. They had high hopes for her.

Glad to know you appreciated her efforts. Sometimes I wonder if some of them even had fans, as they give their lives.

After failing to fire in the 2nd race at Santa Anita today(Very unusual for him) ... On the way back ... Big Note planted his feet ... refused to move ... then kneeled down in front of where I was standing(having taken a pic of him instants before) ... then died ...

VERY heartwrenching to see as he was truly one of my favorites.

Evidently he had a cardiac event ... He just kneeled down on all 4 knees, as they hosed him down and then green-screened and injected him ...

Something I won't forget ... I was hoping it was just that he was over-heated and that he'd be ok ...  :-X

This guy came from Europe ... dropped down the claiming ranks here ... worked himself back up the ranks ... and was in an Allowance/Optional Claiming race today ... He'd hit the Super 14 of 16 races in SoCal ... and the exacta 10 of 16 here ...

He was a true beauty and as honest a horse as you could ever want ... gave his all every time out ...

He will truly be missed. He was a credit to the game and honestly, truly, one of my very favorites out here ... a TRUE REAL racehorse.

It was a horrible event seeing him go like that ... one I won't ever be forgetting.

Career Statistics:

•Starts: 28
•Firsts: 6
•Seconds: 8
•Thirds: 1
•Earnings: $153,644

Of the pics I have, this one captures his true beauty and magnificence best ... (Click on it to make it bigger)

I am so very sorry you had to witness Big Note's agony, TTM.  He was a very handsome horse who always gave his best.

That must have been awful to see that happening right in front of you. I have seen horses break down at a distance, and come undone, can only imagine how awful this must have been. Sorry about that.  May he R. I. P.

From Southern California Thoroughbred Rescue:

We received devastating news this evening from adopter Gay Talmey that she had to humanely euthanize Luis's Especial last night. Louie had suffered a mercifully brief but serious illness, involving seizures and neurological problems likely caused by a migrating tumor. Gay adopted Louie from us in 2009; he was rescued at auction on Kentucky Derby Day of that year. We are so sorry for Gay. May our loveliest boy Louie, a.k.a. "Mr. Special", rest in peace.

Rest in Peace Old Friend - condolences to Gay and all those who grew to love Louie

Oh, nooooo....  He seemed like such a delightful personality, and I was elated when SCTB was able to find him a safe haven.  Godspeed Luis's Especial, you will be remembered.

I used to have a few more photos of him, and will post them if I happen to find them.  Alas, at least two computer crashes ago...

Chattel, a runner in the Ky Downs Juv Turf Sprint, did not survive it. He was knocked down by an uncontrolled horse and suffered a shoulder fracture. It was not repairable. He was euthanized on track.
