I am rooting for Catholic Boy - graded winner on both dirt and turf.
Usually when they run on anything they're really good  :chickendance:

Same here. Although, I must say Solomini has been quite flattered recently...

I know Bolt D'Oro missed some training recently. Did I miss an announcement that he's out?  Seems that barn went from giving updates in great detail to saying almost nothing.

From DRF Jan 4th, never did see any update.

Bolt D'Oro will resume galloping this week after recovering from a pulled muscle that interrupted his training and ultimately postponed his 2018 debut.

Among the leading prospects for the 2018 Kentucky Derby, Bolt D'Oro underwent a nuclear scan this week that came back clean late Wednesday.

However, owner-trainer Mick Ruis said he will not make his first start of the season as scheduled Feb. 10 in the Grade 2 San Vicente Stakes at Santa Anita.

Full story will be posted soon at drf.com.

I have to say that Sporting Chance would be on my short list. He beat a number of decent horses in the Hopeful last year and just posted a 1/108 bullet at OP.

Yeah, I had heard that and also that now the target is the San Felipe for the first race this year.  I'm not sold on Mick Ruis as a trainer yet, especially if he has to hit a curve ball which is what I'd consider the pulled muscle to be.  Nor does C Nak have a great record in the Classics.  I do think Bolt D'Oro is one of the top 12 though.  Until I see he has clearly been surpassed by the others, I'd put him in the top 3.

I watched a replay of a race January 13 Oaklawn Park Race 5 Opt Cl $62,500
Bravazo with Gary Stevens ran down a horse call Ezmosh in a pretty good
time and both horses have great breeding
I put both in my virtual stable  :chickendance: :chickendance: :chickendance:

I haven't seen it, but word is Bolt D'Oro didn't look so great in his first gallop back. The trainer did report he was still experiencing "body soreness" though that quote was from before the workout.

He looked good Monday, but then again he had a Lone F trip on a speed favoring track. I'll reserve judgement until I see him finish after facing some heat. It does make Greyvitos's injury lamentable though.

Well, I'm happy that Shelbe's life has again found meaning since I'm guessing that public stable of hers hasn't taken off. If she needs help, maybe their number one jock, Gary Stevens, can lend a hand on the dark days at Oaklawn.😉

Here's the other Derby Dozen for the week http://cs.bloodhorse.com/blogs/kentucky-derby-dozen/archive/2018/01/30/derby-dozen-january-30-2018-presented-by-shadwell-farm.aspx (http://cs.bloodhorse.com/blogs/kentucky-derby-dozen/archive/2018/01/30/derby-dozen-january-30-2018-presented-by-shadwell-farm.aspx)

I'm starting to pick up speed a bit in my interest of these guys and I am pleased to see that Higher Power got a mention in the link above. The jury is totally out because he's untested, but he's a half to Alternation who I loved, so I have to follow him regardless of whether he's Derby material.
The preps pick up pace a bit this weekend...

Audible looked by far the best of the prep winners Saturday... I'm still not sold 100% for the KD since it's Pletch at GP this time of year. But he did look good.
Sporting Chance is supposed to run at OP on 2/19... hopefully he's set and ready.

Audible did look good. I need to see more to add him. Javier Castellano is loaded with three year olds. If he chooses well he could get his Derby this year.

With Zulfikahr not getting a start in the San Vicente I think I'll replace him with Audible.

Keep your eyeballs on Tenfold, trained by Asmussen. He broke his maiden first out on Feb. 7-  8.5f at OP, running very greenly, but won by open lengths and looked like he wanted to go around again on the gallop out.
Curlin x Tapit mare.... so the pedigree is there.

Combatant and Sporting Chance both looked good in the Southwest imo. Both ran well against the bias. If I had to take a horse out of this one it would be Sporting Chance. First start in almost 6 months, ran against track bias, close early to a solid pace  and got bumped sideways by the runner up mid-stretch. Plus he was a little late switching leads.
I would expect him to move forward next out. Combatant was actually my top pick and also ran well, though with a somewhat better trip than SC. He also bumped that one soundly mid-stretch, but no DQ. Maybe the stewards determined Sporting Chance's late pace wasn't enough to him past Combatant anyway.

Should be a good rematch in the Rebel if all show up.

I wasn't impressed with the FOY at all, but it had more to do with the way the race unfolded than any one performance, other than possibly Good Magic who ran a flat race by most estimations. The top 3 went around the track like a merry go round race; closers had no shot, but might not have been good enough anyway. I wouldn't touch the winner next out, unless it appears on paper that he gets to dictate a slow pace again. Even then, at a short price, no thanks.

WOW - Sticking with Good Magic?? ME TOO
Title: Re: Man o Taz's Derby Dozen
Post by: Man o Taz on April 18, 2018, 08:01:16 AM
I am starting to lean a bit more toward Mendelssohn lately, but he and Good Magic are neck and neck with me. Should be good value. Chad Brown has the knack. Mendolssohn could be a spooky good horse who actually has a foundation.

What I would love to see is a Mendolssohn Justify 3 race tete a tete.

Mendolssohn wins the Derby - Justify runs in the Preakness ala Point Given and they both run in the Belmont Stakes...where Mendolssohn wins again and then they meet for the Travers Stakes and Justify wins that one (or Justify wins the Haskell without Mendolssohn who is rested and then Mendolssohn runs in the Travers winning...heading into the open company races do they rematch in the PA Derby or does Mendolssohn take time off until the BCC?

I would think that would probably be the approach...which would give him a 6 race schedule...

Justify would have the Santa Anita Derby, Preakness Stakes, Haskell and PA Derby, and Mendolssohn would have the UAE Derby, Kentucky Derby, Belmont Stakes, Travers Stakes...and what a BCC that would be...4 G1s to 3 G1s but Mendossohn with a 3-1 edge head to head...

One can dream...
